Schuyler Wrestling

History

A BRIEF HISTORY:

Schuyler Central High School began wrestling in 1941. During this time wrestling was a club sport and no competition took place. Walter H Engelhardt was the pioneer that brought wrestling to Schuyler. Another year of club wrestling followed before the sport was dropped and Coach Engelhardt moved on to Minnesota. He is credited with starting numerous high school and college wrestling programs. After a lapse of 20 years the sport was revived in 1963 by future Wrestling Hall of Fame Coach Roger Barry. From 1963 on, Schuyler began developing a solid, hard-nosed wrestling tradition that continues to carry on today.
